The collection provides a chance for general readers, students and academics alike to discover or rediscover Eco's seminal works in semiotics, medievalism, philosophy, art history and literary criticism. This extensive effort took a further dimension in 2009 when Open Books published a newly edited and specially designed 26-volume collection of essays titled Eco Mania Collection. Over the years, Open Books has been dedicated to introducing Eco's fiction as well as his nonfiction works to a broad Korean audience. In 1986, the year of its creation, Open Books published the translation of the award winning and bestselling novel The Name of the Rose and since then, has continued to publish practically all of the works by the world-renowned scholar. Umberto Eco has been a major author in Open Books' catalogue since the very beginning.

As words can recall in our minds past life, events or traditions, we also want to talk about our passed time (childhood, family or local traditions, and so on).Įach element of the novel can be an inspiration to a new task and can give origin to connections between these ideas in order to create a maze similar to the library in the novel of the Italian writer.- Most popular title: The Name of the Rose (Il nome della rosa) We only know them by the description made by Adso, one of the main characters in the novel, the rest is lost forever). The last line of the novel, as suggested by Eco, wants to point out that from the beauty of the past, now disappeared, we hold only the name so in the novel, the lost "rose" can be seen as Aristotle's “book on comedy “(now forever lost) or the exquisite library of the novel now destroyed. A part of the project will be devoted to the discovery of the meaning of the names (meaning of personal names, toponymy, etc,), and another part will deal with the novel itself ( medieval world, books, meaning of the last sentence of the novel: "Stat rosa pristina nomine, nomina nuda tenemus", whose rough meaning is: "Of the rose of the past, we have only its name"). Starting from the title of the novel, “the Name of the Rose”, we have decided to create activities which make use of associations referred to the following words: name, rose, mystery book. Our students will have to discover that, throughout the centuries, the “rose” has always been used as a symbolic element and it has had different meanings in different fields: culture, tradition, history and religion.

The title of the novel, “ the Name of the Rose ", by Umberto Eco, an Italian writer, is the inspiration for the activities of our project.
